Learn to Skate Classes 

Skating School Program Levels

The Learn to Skate classes are divided into 3 Skill Levels: Little Stars, Level 1 and Level 2

Little Star Programs: Ages 3- 5 : Skill Levels: Tot 1, 2, 3, 4 & Tot Pre-Alpha

Level 1: Ages 6 - Adult : Skill Levels: Pre-Alpha & Alpha

Level 2: Skaters Passed Pre-Alpha & Alpha skills tests: Skill Levels: Beta, Gamma & Delta

Balance, forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and edges are taught at the different skill levels. Providing the building blocks for advancement in each of the ISI Skill Levels, which are necessary for more advanced disciplines such as ice hockey and figure skating. Skaters' will be divided by age and skill level, previous skating experience is not necessary. Skaters' class time will be determined by skating experience and ISI skill level of the highest level passed.

Please Note: Classes have a limited number of spaces and tend to fill-up prior to the first day of classes. Please register early to ensure a spot for your skater(s).

Little Stars Classes:
Skaters who are between the ages of 3 - 5 , with little or no experience.  Little Stars will learn the basics of skating in an age appropriate setting.  Little Stars will be taught the skills of the ISI Tot 1, 2, 3, 4 & Tot Pre-Alpha skill tests.

Level 1 Class
All skaters who have no formal instructional experience and/or have not passed the ISI Beta level skating test will begin in the Level 1 class. Level 1 skaters will be instructed the skills of the ISI: Pre-Alpha & Alpha skill tests

Level 2 Class
Skaters must have formal lesson experience and have passed the Pre-Alpha, Alpha and Beta tests or their equivalent in order to participate in the Level 2 class.  Level 2 skaters will be instructed on the skills of the ISI Beta, Gamma & Delta skill tests.

Level 1 Class Times
Wednesday - 6:30 - 7:00 PM
Saturday - 12:30 - 1:00 PM
Level 1 includes skaters ages 3 and up, with no formal instructional experience and skaters with previous instructional experience at the ISI Skill levels: Tot 1 - 4, Pre-Alpha, Alpha or Beta levels.

Level 1 includes a weekly 30-minute instructional class, skate rental, if necessary and public skating session. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series.

Level 2 Class Times
Wednesday - 5:50 - 6:30 PM
Saturday - 11:50 AM - 12:30 PM
Level 2 includes skaters who have passed the ISI Beta skills test and are at the Gamma or Delta level and approval from the Skating Director.

Level 2 includes a weekly 40-minute instructional class: 10 minutes of stroking workshop and 30-minute skill focused instruction, skate rental, if necessary and public skating session. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series.

Learn to Skate Registration

To register for any of the Skating School programs including: Learn to Skate Level 1 & 2 and Little Stars programs, please contact the customer service desk by calling: 412.397.3335 press "0" when the automated message begins and you will be connected to the customer service desk.  If they are not with another customer, they will be able to take your call and register the skater(s) over the phone with a credit card.  Full payment is due at time of registration.  You may also register in person by going to the main desk at the Island Sports Center.  Additional questions may be directed to Skating Director, Beth Sutton: 412.397.4469 or sutton@rmuislandsports.org
