Year-Round for Ages 4-12

Learn to Play Hockey classes provide children the opportunity to learn the basics of skating and hockey from USA Hockey-trained instructors in a fun-to-learn, relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere. No skating or hockey experience is required.

Each 50-minute class will include 40 minutes of skating and stick instruction along with a 10-minute hockey game. Upon completion of the program, players are ready to join the RMU ISC Island Colonials and enjoy playing with children of similar age and ability.

Pre-Hockey/Learn to Skate

No skating or hockey experience is necessary for the Pre Hockey Learn to Skate Classes
A structured lesson plan provides a strong foundation of skating know-how and confidence building. Skills include stance, walking, t-push, two-foot glide, scooting, O's, preparing for snowplow stop, backward stance, and walking.

Hockey I
Each week includes a review of skills learned in Pre Hockey/Learn to Skate and the introduction of new skills such as snowplow stop, one-foot glides, backward O's, and forward strides. From this solid base, the fundamental skills of skating, stick handling, passing and shooting can be properly taught.

Hockey II
Each week includes a review of skills learned in Hockey I and the introduction of new skills such as v-start, stationary and moving stick handling, open ice carry, forehand, and backhand passing and receiving, turning, and use of feet to control the puck, and stopping with the puck.

Priority Registration
Because our program fills very quickly we have adopted the following priority registration policy to ensure that returning children have the opportunity to register as long as they meet the deadline.

Priority 1
Skaters enrolled in the present session. 

Priority 2

• Priority 2 students must meet ONE of the following criteria.
• They are a sibling of a child enrolled in the current Session of LTP Hockey.
• The student or sibling is/was enrolled in one of the RMU LTP Hockey Sessions between September 2025 and July 2026.
• The skater, a sibling, or an immediate family member is/was enrolled in one of the RMU Learn to Skate sessions between September 2025 and July 2026.
• They are a sibling of a child who is playing for the Arctic Foxes or the Island Colonial during the 2024-2025 season.
• They are a child of a current RMU employee and/or student.
• They are a child of RMU Alumni.
• They have moved to the Pittsburgh area from an area outside the tri-state region within the last 6 months. (Must get Blaine Buterbaugh approval prior to registering to meet these criteria.) 

Priority 3
Open registration.

Equipment
Classes require a USA Hockey-approved helmet (HECC) with a facemask, hockey skates, hockey elbow pads, hockey shin guards, hockey gloves, hockey pants, neck laceration protection, and a hockey stick. An athletic cup and shoulder pads are recommended.

**Under a USA Hockey mandate, all participants under the age of 18 must wear an approved neck guard during all sessions beginning August 1, 2024.

All skaters will receive an RMU Island Colonials hockey jersey for the first session in which they enroll. Rental skates are available at no charge. The RMU ISC Pro Shop offers a special Beginner's Package and an Equipment Buy Back Program. For more information, call 412-397-4459.

USA Hockey Membership
You must have your 2025-2026 USA Hockey Membership to register for the LTP Hockey program. Go to www.usahockey.com and click on 'online registration'. Once you have completed the registration process you will be emailed a confirmation page with a 14-digit confirmation number.  You will need this number to enroll your child in the Learn to Play Hockey program.

This membership fee is valid through August 31, 2026.

COACHES WANTED
Calling all parents, and assistant coaches are needed. Do not worry about having to skate like Sidney Crosby. If you enjoy working with children, we would love to have you on the ice - it's fun!!!

We supply you with the "what, when, and how" to teach - you supply the enthusiasm and a lending hand. Please note all parents wishing to help out on the ice must wear a USA Hockey HECC certified hockey helmet and read, sign and abide by our Working with Minors Policy.
