WHAT IS THE RMU ISLAND COLONIALS YOUTH IN-HOUSE LEAGUE?

The RMU Island Colonials Youth In-House Hockey League is the only program of its kind in the Pittsburgh area to offer league play for each of the recognized USA Hockey Age classifications.

Our league is rooted in development, which makes it the ideal place for players to learn the fundamentals of ice hockey and team play concepts.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE RMU ISLAND COLONIALS

WHEN DOES THE SEASON BEGIN AND END?
The season begins Saturday, September 13, 2025, and runs through Sunday, March 22, 2026. There are no games or practices during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Martin Luther King Day weekends.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT AGE CLASSIFICATION MY PLAYER SHOULD REGISTER FOR?
Players should register based on the 2025-2026 USA Hockey Age Classifications below
Mite / U8                            Players born 2017 and later
Squirt / U10                      Players born 2015 & 2016
Pee Wee / U12                 Players born 2013 & 2014
Bantam / U14                  Players born 2011 & 2012
Midget / U16 & U18        Players born 2007-2010

WHAT DAYS OF THE WEEK DO THE ISLAND COLONIALS SKATE?
In general, the Island Colonials will practice on Saturday and play games on Sunday.

*Players in the 10U, 12U, 14, and 16U/18U divisions will also rotate through Friday evening practice ice.

** Mite 1 will have a weekly Power Skating Slot on Wednesday evening and team practice on Friday Evenings.

HOW ARE PLAYERS PICKED FOR A TEAM? IS THERE A TRYOUT?
Once registration is accepted, we do not have “tryouts”.  Rather, each RMU Island Colonials season begins with a series of evaluations during the first three weeks.  The evaluations are used to rank players within each specific age classification and ultimately help in drafting teams.  The goal of each draft session is to create balanced teams per age classification to start the season.

ONCE TEAMS ARE SELECTED, HOW WILL I KNOW MY PLAYERS' SCHEDULE
Once teams are selected, your player’s schedule will be hosted online for the duration of the season.

MY PLAYER HAS A FRIEND THAT IS ALSO IN THE LEAGUE. CAN THEY PLAY ON THE SAME TEAM?
Players that are of the same age classification can utilize our carpool option, which ensures they will be drafted to the same tea,m provided they are placed in the same tier per their skills evaluation (8U level will have tiers)

As an example, two U8-aged players want to play on the same team and utilize the carpool option.  After the individual skills evaluation, players are grouped into the same game skills evaluation and ultimately end up in the same tier. These players would be drafted to the same team.

Conversely, two U8-aged players want to play on the same team and utilize the carpool option.  After the individual skills evaluation and the game skills evaluation, it is determined that these two players will compete in different tiers.  As such, the carpool will not be honored.

THE RMU SELECTS PROGRAM

The RMU Selects program is available to players who want "a little bit more".  Branded as "Travel Hockey Light," The RMU Selects is a great option for families who want to explore what travel hockey has to offer but are not quite ready for the full financial and time commitment often associated with travel hockey.

We offer programs at the following levels

  • 8U (Mite 1)
  • 10U
  • 12U
  • 14U

RMU Selects - 8U

At the 8U level, no additional tryout is required.  Players will be offered a spot in our Mite 1 program based on the evaluations during the first three weeks of the season.

Players who are offered and accept a spot in Mite 1 will be assessed an additional fee to cover the cost of additional practice time, additional jerseys, and incurred league fees.

**Families offered an M1 placement may choose to decline M1 and will automatically be moved to our M2 grouping.  Each year, a few families choose not to participate at M1 level due to increased time at the rink or financial obligation.

The Mite 1 group will have a dedicated power skating practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:00-6:50 PM and a team practice on Fridays at 6:00-7:05 PM.  Additionally, they will participate in a league that will see them play games at rinks within a 60-minute drive of RMU-ISC in addition to home games, and the RMU Nutcracker Tournament between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

An informational video meeting will be offered late August to all 8U families to provide complete M1 and InHouse details.

RMU Selects - 10U, 12U, & 14U

At the 10U, 12U, and 14U levels, Island Colonials players have the option to register for and try out to be selected for the RMU Selects.

Players selected for the RMU Selects will incur an additional fee to cover the costs of additional ice time, uniforms, and Nutcracker Tournament Fees.

At the 10U age classification and above, Players chosen for the RMU Selects will receive two team practices, 4 home games, 4 away games, and team entrance  to the RMU Nutcracker Tournament between Christmas and New Year’s Day

An informational video meeting will be offered late August to all 10U, 12U, and 14U level players to provide complete details.
