The Learn to Skate classes are divided into 3 Skill Levels: Little Stars, Level 1 and Level 2
Basic Skills – FUNdamentals Basic Skills teaches the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for recreational skating, figure skating, hockey, and speedskating. Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns.
Discover, Learn and Play – Basic Skills 1 and 2: These introductory levels allow new skaters with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate.
FUNdamentals – Basic Skills 3–6: These levels develop all of the fundamental skating skills on the ice. Focus is on learning the ABCs of basic athleticism: agility, balance, coordination and speed. Upon completion of these levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.
Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1-6 levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating. All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated.
Little Stars Classes
Skaters who are between the ages of 3 - 5 , with little or no experience. Little Stars will learn the basics of skating in an age appropriate setting. Little Stars will be taught the skills of the Snowplow Sam 1, 2, 3, 4 & Tot Basic 1 skill tests. After completion of Snowplow Sam & Tot Basic 1, Little Star skaters will enter the Level 1 Class.

Level 1 Class
All skaters who have no formal instructional experience and/or have not passed the ISI Beta level skating test will begin in the Level 1 class. Level 1 skaters will be instructed the skills of the Learn to Skate USA: Basic 1, 2, 3, & 4
Level 2 Class
Skaters must have formal lesson experience and have passed the Basic Skills 1, 2, 3 & 4 skills tests or their equivalent in order to participate in the Level 2 class. Level 2 skaters will be instructed on the skills of Learn to Skate USA: Basic 5 & 6
Level 1 Class Times
Wednesday - 6:30 - 7:00 PM
Saturday - 12:45 - 1:15 PM
Level 1 includes skaters ages 6 and up, with no formal instructional experience and/or skaters with previous instructional experience at the Basic Skill Tests: 1, 2, 3 or 4
Level 1 includes a weekly 30-minute instructional class, skate rental, if necessary and public skating session. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series.
Level 2 Class Times
Wednesday - 5:50 - 6:30 PM
Saturday - 12:05 - 12:45 PM
Level 2 includes skaters who have passed the Basic Skills Tests: 1, 2, 3 & 4 and are at the Basic 5 or 6 skill level or approval from the Skating Director.
Level 2 includes a weekly 40-minute instructional class: 10 minutes of stroking workshop and 30-minute skill focused instruction, skate rental, if necessary. *Level 2 figure skaters may skate the figure skating "freestyle session" prior to the start of class. Level 2 hockey skaters will be permitted to skate public skating session following class. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series. It is recommended that all Level 2 skaters purchase their own skates.

Students are limited to one make-up class per series, which must be completed before the end of the registered session. A class must be missed before a skater can attend a make-up session.
Refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If a refund is permitted, it will be pro-rated from the request date and must be approved by the Skating Director. Refunds after 4 weeks of class will not be permitted.

Make-up session is not available for the summer session of classes in July.
No credit or refund will be issued for missed classes during the month of July during the summer session.

ON-LINE REGISTRATION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR CLASSES 48 HOURS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SESSION.

If they are not with another customer, they will be able to take your call and register the skater(s) over the phone with a credit card. Full payment is due at time of registration. You may also register in person by going to the main desk at the Island Sports Center.
Please Note: Classes have a limited number of spaces and tend to fill-up prior to the first day of classes. Please register early to ensure a spot for your skater(s).
Upon completion of a skater's Snowplow Sam 2 or Basic 2 skill test, skaters will receive a complementary ($18 value) membership to Learn to Skate USA for the 2019-20 season (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020) The individual skater will be registered as a member of the RMU Island Sports Center Skating Academy.
